A trip to Lundy Island is a special and unforgettable experience.
Lundy Island day trips from Ilfracombe or Bideford North Devon and takes around 2 hours on board MS Oldenburg. Call or e mail Lundy Booking Office at The Pier Ilfracombe. Trips start 26th March until 28th October. This was a memorable trip for many reasons. Ilfracombe is only 7 miles from Braunton so not too early to start the day. Sailing from Ilfracombe at 10 am and returning for 6 pm. The boat has original panels and brass fittings and is heated for comfort on those windy days. It was very exciting waiting to board and then we had breakfast in the buffet where there is a bar also which we resisted until the return journey. There is also a shop and information centre on board.
We went in September from on a beautiful sunny day and I really enjoyed the boat ride itself. The sea was calm and smooth. It was amazing out on the deck watching the island come in closer. We saw a pod of dolphins and the sea changed to a aquamarine just pulling into the harbour where seals were frolicking along the shore on their backs, cute little noses in the air.as the surf rocked them to and fro. To see the Puffins a trip in May or June is best although there are plenty of other birds on the island. Recommend binoculars to see down the steep cliffs.
Lundy Island is described as the UK’s Galapagos Islands and it feels like paradise with over 100 species of butterflies and fox gloves and primroses and orchids everywhere you walk. Just 3 miles by a half a mile to walk and see across the ocean is real breathtaking.
There is a very steep climb from the harbour to the top but worth every step and the Marisco Tavern awaits. You can also get some really nice food here but we took a picnic.
To be continued…….including photos and activities.
