On our doorstep and on every cyclist to do list, is a cycling holiday in North Devon.

Cycling Holidays in North Devon at Holmsleigh, the Route 27 is a must for keen cyclists to experience every kind of landscape this country has to offer. Riding on a decent tarmac surface with no traffic. Most cyclists will find the Braunton to Meeth and back again an achievable 62 mile round trip. Mostly on the flat this old railway line provides a safe and invigorating ride taking in woodland, marshland estuary’s and beaches.

Firstly from Braunton, views to Braunton Burrows, Crow Point and along the estuary. Past Chivenor  air base and a chance to have a coffee at the side of the estuary or further along is the Braunton Inn pub serving a full pub menu with real ales and great outdoor seating.

Contintue towards Barnstaple and and if you haven’t eaten already ride into Town and sample an afternoon tea at Tea On the Taw. Then go over the bridge and the Trail leads you to the old Fremington Quay and on towards Instow. A lovely seaside place for ice cream and the famous local deli called John’s.

Many exciting places to see and wildlife to enjoy including the Puffing Billy Pub at Torrington . This used to be the railway station.

Cycling Holidays in North Devon starting at The Tarka Trail

There are many options to do as many miles as you like. The other cycle route is the North Devon coast to coast cycle ride which incorporates the Tarka Trail. This ride starts at Ilfracombe to Plymouth and is 59 miles one way for a more experienced cyclist who like a challenge. Remember though you can catch the train back with your bike to Barnstaple.

Is easy with lot’s of outdoor spaces, natural countryside, beaches and facilities at your finger tips.

Day Out With Kids Braunton take a ride to Crow Point Beach and walk along the American Road, named after the troops from the USA. Training in the 1940’s amongst the sand dunes and on the beaches. Walk along side the waterways. A natural irrigation called a dyke with grazing cattle and roaming sheep along the fields next to it.  Here you will see heron and swans and birds of prey.

Pass Velator Quay for great fishing and no better catcher than the kingfisher can be spotted here. Turn left onto the toll road and £1.70 only for a day as long as you want. There is a car park at the end of the road and a large map of the area will guide you. Take the boardwalk through the Braunton Burrows to Saunton Sands taking in the rare wildlife or camp out for the day on Crow Point Beach.

This is a stunning location to take a picnic , some chairs, have a B B Q from just getting the kids to gather the stones for a circle and driftwood to burn.  There are no crowds. This is a family day out where the kids can let go and enjoy nature. Collect driftwood and stones and shells, to use later and decorate on those rainy days to create your own memory keepsakes. All of this is free to you. No spending a fortune in gift shops

Day Out With Kids Braunton at Crow Point

Make a simple wind chime from a long piece of driftwood and then attach smaller pieces that hang with some fishing line. Paint messages on the stones and put them in your garden or hand out to friends. The clam shells have a little hole where they were once joined together. Find enough of these and they make nice jewellery.

Children will learn so much and remember happy times of simple fun. A complete no stress, no spend day out in Braunton for the kids.

A steep path down to a secluded cove between steep cliffs and giant rocks randomly jutting out with rare shells attached that have been washed in from the gulf stream. A romantic Greek like cove with little nooks to sunbathe. When the tide is in it becomes a beautiful lagoon to swim in between the imposing giant rocks. In the evening as the sunsets and the waters lap along your toes you can enjoy an amazing curry from the Barricane cafe. Take your own wine.

  • Heddons Mouth is a surprise Beach at the end of an Exmoor walk.

Take the footpath from the National Trust car park and walk next to the fast flowing river moving over large stones surrounded by woodlands and rising up to the skyline is the formidable cliff side of the national park. Sit on giant boulders and cross the stepping stones where river meets the sea. A pebble beach moves around the cliffs for private sunbathing spots in a fresh and invigorating environment. Eat great food on your return from Beach at The Hunters Inn set in the amazing Exmoor Valley.
